Hi All,
Firstly, thanks for your patience on Wed night. As most of you would be aware we had some 'issues' with the new sounding/timing system that led to a 10 min delay in getting started and then on top of that we could not reprogram the timer-box-of-tricks and had to wear 3min half-time breaks instead of the intended 1 min.
We'll get things sorted for this coming Wed and hopefully get underway bang on correct time. Many thanks to Jeremy Crawford and Marty Jack for all their hard work on the new timing/sounding system. We realise it will take a little while for everyone to get used to this new system, but it will be great in the long run. I'm sure we will all take another game or two to really become accustomed to the two different sirens sounds for Court 1 and Court 3.
Now, the main reason for this message is to pass on the very good news that Garry Davidson has been making great progress in the project of getting UWHockey going again in Launceston. This Tues at 6.30pm will see the first scratch games at the new Launceston Aquatic Centre. Garry is going up there on Tuesday to help them get set-up and to provide some training for the new starters. If you happen to be in Launceston on that evening I'm sure Garry would greatly appreciate some assistance.
Also, if you have friends or relatives in Launceston who might be keen to play UWHockey, please let them know about next Tues and the Tuesdays to come (i.e. it will be a weekly event). See Garry's email below to the northerners. He has already received indications that there is likely to be at least 10 players turning up to this first scratch game, so that's very promising.
Craig

>G'day potential hockey players,
>
>If you have received this, I have obtained your e-mail from a list
>accumulating at the LAC, or via a previous expression of interest.
>If you are no longer interested in this, please do e-mail and I will
>take you off the list.
>
>We are starting a regular game of underwater hockey on Tuesday
>nights at the deep end of the LAC pool. The pool is providing the
>pool space, so you tell them you are there for the game and pay them
>$6.75. The pool is providing the water polo/water basketball hats
>that we will use for head protection (unless you have your own). The
>pool is providing access to plastic bats that our association has
>provided, unless you have your own. We will be providing the
>lead-plastic pucks to the pool for use on each night. These will all
>need to be returned to the desk each night.
>
>YOU need to provide your own gear, being:
>* fins (preferably without buckles, as these catch on peoples hair
>and make them unhappy with you)
>* mask and snorkel. (We strongly recommend that you make yourself
>comfortable with these before you come, as you don't want to waste
>time during the session)
>* a gardening or neoprene glove for your playing hand ( we can give
>you details of where to buy these, and how to make them)
>* bathers (girls, preferably one-piece as beach bikinis are
>unreliable in these circumstances)
>* If you have a mouthgaurd that you are comfortable wearing, bring
>it along (this can initially be a challenge with a snorkel, I know;
>I also have external ones to sell for $5. Mouthgaurds aren't
>essential but they give you protection in case there is a rare accident)
>
>We view this regular training and games slot as a step towards
>getting a proper competition going. Right now there are not enough
>people who know how to play the game, to organise a competition. We
>hope these scratch games will help fix this. We also (keenly) wish
>to identify people willing to help set up and organise from week to
>week; at this stage we could do this by setting up a roster (Please
>let me know if you are willing to be one of those people). Remember
>this is a trial, and if the pool begins to get the impression that
>the sport is not taking off, they may withdraw their pool hire
>subsidy. So the message is, please spread the word, and bring along
>friends who may be interested (send me their contact details, or
>give them to the pool, so we can keep building this e-mail contact list).
>
>If you think you will come along this coming Tuesday, please do
>e-mail and let me know so that we can cater for numbers.
