Account Terms of Usage

About these Guidelines

These guidelines apply to any use of online services provided by The UTAS Computing Society (TUCS). All members must adhere to these guidelines when using any computer service provided by the society. These services include: file storage, web hosting, e-mail, or any other computing service provided by the TUCS to our members.

Use of Service

Use of all existing online services provided by The UTAS Computing Society is bound by the Information Technology Resources (ITR) Computer Usage Guidelines.
These guidelines cover ethical use, appropriate use, and copyright laws which are applicable to all services provided by TUCS.

You can view the guidelines here: http://www.utas.edu.au/itr/policies/usage_guide.html.

Shell Account Usage

Shell accounts (specifically, accounts not restricted to our default shell [ids_shell]) are granted only whilst a user provides a legitimate explanation for requiring such privileges.

A user’s shell access will be terminated if that user does not respond to queries from TUCS Administration regarding current usage of that account. At its discretion, TUCS Administration may terminate a user’s shell access if that user’s usage is deemed in violation of TUCS or ITR policy. If such a situation arises, the user in question will be duly informed of the situation.

Liability

While TUCS makes every effort to ensure the safety of your data, the society disclaims any liability due to loss of data in any way. You should always backup important work to another location.

Breach of Guidelines

If a user is found to be in breach of the ITR Computer Usage Guidelines their account will be suspended and their actions reported to the TUCS executive commitee. The executive’s responsibility will be to fairly analyse the facts, and determine an appropriate course of action in response to the incident. Under these circumstances, the executive may be obligated to examine your online space and/or refer the breach to the University of Tasmania’s IT Resources depending on the nature of the incident.

The above concessions exist to ensure that TUCS remains free of liability in the event of a policy breach.
